On May 13-14, Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) will organize public consultations in Nova Varos as part of the development of a study on the state of the environment and social aspects of the Bistrica pumped-storage hydro power plant (PSHPP) construction project.

The consultations will be held in the Lim Hydro Power Plants administration building, where the technical aspects of the project, as well as the impacts on the environment and society, will be presented to the public.

It was recently announced that EPS had postponed the deadline for completing the draft environmental impact assessment study for this project, and the company told the Danas newspaper that the reason for this was to comply with new legal regulations. As EPS explains, the study is being developed in accordance with the current Law on Environmental Impact Assessment and the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

– The preparation of the draft study has been postponed due to the coming into force of the new Law on Environmental Impact Assessment on December 6, 2024. The new law has brought changes to the content of the study, so it is necessary to harmonize the draft with the new regulations – EPS stated.

Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic previously stated that preparatory work on the construction of the PSHPP Bistrica was planned to begin in 2026.

In March of this year, it was announced that the Feasibility Study for the construction of the PSHPP Bistrica had been completed, while obtaining location requirements and preparing project documentation for the relocation of part of the route of state roads, power lines and water supply systems were in the final phase. This was discussed at the fourth session of the Working Group of the Government of Serbia for the construction of the PSHPP Bistrica, at which progress in the preparation of project and technical documentation and the planned next steps in the implementation of the project were discussed.
