There Will Be More Coal from Kostolac – New “Zapad” Mine Project Reaches Technical Control Phase

Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) has published the tender for the technical control of the main mining project of the opening of “Zapadni Kostolac” site.

The value of the job has been estimated at RSD 18 million, and the tender expires on March 23.

The construction of the open-pit mine “Zapadni Kostolac”, whose exploitation reserves have been confirmed at around 280,000,000 tons, is planned in two phases according to the project.

The first phase entails the procurement of the missing equipment, including a grinding facility, as well as the solving of the water transport of coal, on the Great Morava, toward the thermal power plant in Obrenovac.

The projected annual capacity is 3 million tons of coal, along with the accompanying gravel quantities.

The coal would be used for the needs of the thermal power plants in Obrenovac. Before being delivered to the thermal power plants in Obrenovac, the coal would be ground to a certain granulation size in the “Zapadni Kostolac” location.

The second phase will entail a gradual inclusion of the equipment from the “Drmno” mine, which would go out of exploitation. The first planned exit of an excavator from the production activities at the open-pit mine “Drmno” would be in early 2033.

In this phase, another 200,000 tons of open-pit coal is planned for the industry and general consumption, so, in addition to the coal quantities from the first phase for the supply of the thermal power plant in Obrenovac, the supply of thermal blocks in Kostolac B would be done as well.

The value of this investment, as the media reported earlier, will be around EUR 400 million.

Let us remind that, in November last year, EPS also opened the tender for 89 exploratory boreholes, and the job worth RSD 98.56 million was awarded to five local companies – Institut za rudarstvo i metalurgiju Bor, Georad doo Drmno, Geoing group doo Beograd, RI doo Beograd and Geomagdoo Beograd.
