The Croatian members of the European Parliament hope that this might happen as soon as 2019.
The main position of the proposers of this great change in the system of entering and exiting the EU area is that the Union should not feature second-class states and that it is therefore proposed for the Schengen Area to be extended so as to include Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia.
The Croatian members of the European Parliament, as well as local officials, are pleased with the decision made by the European Parliament. They say that Croatia has never had such clear political support from the European Parliament regarding its joining the Schengen Area.
Croatia is now expected to meet all the criteria for inclusion in the Schengen Area by the end of 2018, and the Council is then to recognize the changes made.
The entrance to the Schengen Zone is a political decision which required a unanimous decision by the European Council. The Council said that the process of evaluation of Croatia was still in progress and that certain flaws were being addressed, but that very few issues remained that might be addressed by the European Commission in the near future.
