Bečej to have spa complex by 2017 – Kuwaiti Alghanim National also planning a shopping mall and marina on the Tisa
The Kuwaiti company Alghanim National is intending to invest some USD 120m in a tourist spa complex in Bečej. The company signed a memorandum of understanding in May with the Ministry of Economy. As Bečej mayor Vuk Radojević says, we are getting close to confirming that Bečej will again be a spa town. Radojević has just been awarded a plaque for exceptional engagement and commitment in preparing the project for the tourist spa complex.
Based on a tradition almost a century long and ambitious plans, the current local government fought with the Ministry of Health two years ago for Bečej to regain its status as a spa town. Now comes the far harder part of the job, building the spa complex. With the powerful capital offered by the Kuwaiti company with President Bašir Alganim at its head, everything should be much easier.
“After a series of constructive talks with the company President`s adviser Naser Mohamed Zatam and President Bašir Alganim himself in which we provided all the required information, they expressed a clear intention to build a complex like no other in a wide region, on 25 hectares of the banks of the Tisa and an island at the very confluence of the Great Bački Canal and the river”, said Vuk Radojević.
The project will be built in three phases. In the first a spa complex will be built with everything needed, a hotel and wellness centre; in the second a shopping mall; in the third phase villas with swimming pools on around seven hectares of an artificial canal island between two locks. At the same time a marina will be built on the Tisa, which would be a great tourist stimulus, especially for nautical river tourism.
The investor plans to attract guests from the region, but also from the Arab world. For this reason there will be hotel rooms that satisfy the needs of our guests and those of the wider region, but also exclusive apartments of some hundred square metres and villas with swimming pools on the island for tourists from the Arab world who have their own demands and the means to pay for them.
If all goes as the Mayor of Bečej says, the largest town of the Tisa region will soon change its appearance completely and become, besides an agricultural centre, a tourist centre for a region wider than that of the Tisa.
Investor presents a plan
The investor has presented the Bečej building directorate with technical documentation containing a number of proposals, and it is now up to the local government to change its existing detailed regulatory plan to meet the requirements of the investor.
“It`s a long way to completion”, announced Vuk Radojević. “We`re now in the phase of shifting ownership of the island from the state to Bečej municipality, in the autumn we have to complete the sale of the building land to give the investor conditions to start building works next year. According to their schedule, the entire investment will be completed in three years from the first spade in the ground, and work on the first project phase should already be finished towards the end of 2017.”
