For the construction of the two-track electrified railroad for a speed of 200 km/h between Belgrade and Nis, which will be 230 kilometers long, the project documentation is currently being prepared, and the estimated value of the works is EUR 2.775 billion. Of that, the European Union is securing a donation of EUR 610 million. The fast railroad is expected to be built during 2029, as pointed out for the Pruga publication by Nebojsa Surlan, the CEO of Serbian Railways Infrastructure, the company announced on its website.

– The preparation of the project-technical documentation for the railroad from Nis to Presevo, whose reconstruction could begin in 2025 and be completed in 2028, is also in progress. The railroad on the international rail Corridor 10 Stara Pazova-Sid-Croatian state border will also be designed for a speed of 200 km/h, and the preparation of the technical documentation for this project is also in progress. We are also looking at the reconstruction of the Bar railroad from Valjevo to Vrbnica, as well as numerous regional railroads such as Vrbas-Sombor, Pancevo Glavna-Banatsko Milosevo-Coka-Subotica and Stalac-Kraljevo-Rudnica, but also the construction of the new railroad (Jovanovac)-“Cvetojevac” railroad junction-Sobovica. In the territory of Belgrade as well, we are looking at two important projects. One is the construction of a new railroad, 19 kilometers long, on the Zemun Polje-Nikola Tesla Airport-National Stadium Surcin route, which is necessary for the purposes of the EXPO 2027 event. The other is the construction of the road and rail bypass route around Belgrade, from Bubanj Potok, through Vinca to Pancevo, where the length of the railroad will be 28.8 km, and it will enable the traffic flows to be fully moved from the center of the capital city, including the rail transport of hazardous matters. Our aim is to complete all these projects by 2030 – Surlan pointed out.

When it comes to the Single Dispatch Center, which will be located at the Beograd Ranzirna rail station in Makis, according to Surlan, the preparation of the project-technical documentation for it is completed and the conditions have met for the execution of the works. The value of the works on the construction of the Single Dispatch Center is around EUR 115 million.

– This is a modern dispatch center with systems for the management and control of rail transport. The Single Dispatch Center will enable the raising of rail traffic security to the highest level, a more efficient control of rail traffic on the Serbian railroads, as well as the optimal usage of the infrastructure capacities for the needs of cargo and passenger traffic. The Single Dispatch Center will encompass all the railroads which are currently managed by Serbian Railways Infrastructure, as well as the future high-speed railroad between Belgrade and Subotica – said Surlan.

As he reminded, the modernization and automation of 35 rail crossings is in progress as well, thanks to the funds. The plan is for the works on all 35 crossings to be completed by the end of May 2024.

– The highest level of the securing of the traffic on rail crossings is the de-leveling of the railroad and the road, which was done during the construction of the high-speed railroad between Belgrade and Novi Sad, where there will be no road and rail crossing at the same level. The same will apply to the fast railroads Novi Sad-Subotica, Belgrade-Nis and other fast railroads in Serbia – explained Surlan.
