At the PE Roads of Serbia, they say for RT Balkan that, with the opening of Sector VI of the Ring Road around Belgrade, the road section from the Belgrade interchange, through the Mostar interchange, to Bubanj Potok, has lessened in importance when it comes to international traffic connection.
In line with the abovesaid, there was a need to change the category of said road section, which, in line with the current Decree on the Criteria for the Categorization of Public Roads, can be categorized as IIB-grade state road. The reason for the change of the road category is the same for the New Belgrade (Vojvodjanska Street)-Surcin Jug Interchange section, they say at the Roads of Serbia.
This public enterprise notes that the change of the road category will not have an impact on the drivers or the priority of its maintenance.
The section from Bubanj Potok to the Belgrade interchange, which is located ahead of Dobanovci, is slightly under 30 kilometers long.
The change of the status of the highway through Belgrade has been announced for years back, and the plan was presented by the current minister of transport of Serbia, Goran Vesic, while he held the position of the deputy mayor of Belgrade. It was announced at the time that it would primarily mean that the breakdown lane would become an additional driving lane wherever there are spatial possibilities for it. In New Belgrade, the highway is still called Arsenija Carnojevica Blvd, and in the old part of the city, it consists of Franse d’Eperea Blvd and Stevana Prvovencanog Blvd.
– Road categorization designates how traffic is regulated, who can take that road, and who maintains it. From traffic conditions, the manner of regulation and maintenance, that is determined by the type of the road, that is, its categorization. The rest is regulated by traffic signs and in other ways. This change expands the possibility of the use of the road. It has not been reduced, especially considering the importance of the Ring Road around Belgrade, to which the cargo traffic has been redirected – said professor Milan Vujanic.
From the idea to move transit traffic from the capital of Serbia to its realization, 30 years passed, but the job is finally finished. It took more than three decades to connect Batajnica and Bubanj Potok and for the Ring Road around Belgrade to be finally connected with Corridor 10 in the full highway profile.
The traffic route is designed for a speed of 120 km/h, and it is 47 kilometers long. The PE Roads of Serbia says that, with the completion of the Ring Road around Belgrade, the traffic is redirected from the overloaded basic network of city traffic routes, which should contribute to shortening travel times for transit flows, reducing the number of traffic accidents, vehicle exploitation costs, harmful gases and vehicle noise in the core city area.
