The Provincial Secretariat for Urban Planning and Environmental Protection in Novi Sad has advertised an early public review of the spatial plan of the special purpose area of the dam on the Tisa.

The aim of the preparation of the document, prepared by the Urban Planning Institute of Vojvodina, is the reconstruction or the construction of a new navigation lock.

As said, the current proportions of the lock enable the handling of only one vessel of a maximum length of 85 m and width of 12 m at the same time, which causes great losses of time and money for boat companies.

It is pointed out that this causes boatmen and agents (forwarders) not to include the Tisa in any considerable capacity in their plans for the transport of larger quantities of goods.

As said, the reconstruction of the existing navigation lock to the end of its extension to 190 m (length) and 24 m (width), or the construction of a new lock with the given dimensions on the other side of the dam, would enable the simultaneous handling of a boat composition characteristic for the VIb waterway category.

Other benefits would include a greater usage of the Senta port and the existing exporting capacities of the companies which operate in the parts of Banat that gravitate toward the Tisa.

The dam on the Tisa near Novi Becej, with seven spillway bays and a navigation lock for boats with a load bearing capacity of up to 1,000 tons, was built in 1977 and is the largest structure of the Danube-Tisa-Danube hydro system.

Let us remind that, toward the end of last year, the company Vode Vojvodine published the tender for the preparation of the technical documentation for the repair and adaptation of the navigation lock of the dam on the Tisa.
