The European Union has reached an agreement to allow the growing of genetically modified organisms on its territory, leaving the countries opposing GMO the option to place a ban.

The agreement which should be signed June 12 by environmental ministers was adopted at a meeting of permanent representatives of 28 members of the EU after years-long attempts at reaching an agreement in that field.

Belgium was the only country abstained from voting at that meeting.

The new agreement will make it possible for every EU country to ban GMO growing on a part of its territory or its entire surface area, but not for health or environmental reasons. However, these reasons can be public order, space management, or the fight against the spread of certain species.
Even the EU members that are opposing the growing of GMO's will not be able to forbid the transit of such organisms across their territory.

GMO seeds manufacturers have been waiting for this agreement for 14 years.
