Coal Mine "Kovin" will most probably be separated from Electric Power Company of Serbia. Before the approval of the development strategy for area of special purpose - Special Reservation of Nature "Deliblatska peščara", potential role of coal deposit Kovin must be taken into consideration one more time. The deposit represents basic energy potential of Vojvodina - the following quantities of balance coal reserves were researched and determined in period from 1976 to 1999 - lignite: field A has 137,000,000 tons of coal, while field B has 85,000,000 tons, whereas there are 8,077,306 tons of coal in the unprotected part of the coast, which makes total of 230,077,306 balance reserves of coal in the deposit (heating value of the coal is about 8,200 KJ/kg).

According to the results of the latest researches, which were carried out in 2004, it was confirmed that there are geological preconditions for discovery of new reserves, which are estimated to about 170-180 million tons, on the wider area of deposit "Kovin" and in its deeper parts. With so-far researched reserves, these are, according to the world standards, very respectable quantities of about 400 million tons of quality lignite. It is necessary to make the decision on valorization of so-far discovered reserves and take into consideration the possibility of construction of steam power plant of capacity of over 600 MW in Kovin. According to the prices from the year 2000, total investments in the exploitation would amount to about €136m. Along with the price of coal of €8-10 per ton, the analysis shows that the construction of underwater mine Kovin is economically justified

The draft of the project task for the justification study on construction of "Energy-technological Center Kovin" implies production of electric power in 3 units of 210 MW each, construction of the unit for transmission of electric power of 400 kV, excavation and storing of 70,000,000 tons of barren land on annual basis, excavation of 3,000,000 tons of consuming sand and gravel per year, as well as production of consuming coal and hydro-thermally dried coal, which is highly demanded all around the world.

There are already some possible partners and investors interested in this project.
