AGRICULTURE MINISTRY: We won't allow either growing or import of GMOs

The Agriculture Ministry is not going to allow either the growing of genetically modified crops in the territory of Serbia or the import of GMO products for human use, the Ministry said in a release.
- Amendments to the current GMO Law would bring order to the market, all products would be covered by declarations and consumers would always know the contents of the products they buy - said people at the Agriculture Ministry.
As it was announced, amendments to the applicable GMO Law would also harmonize our country's regulations governing that field with those in the EU which are deemed the most restrictive in the world.
- The GMO Law that has been in effect since 2009 is not safe for the citizens of Serbia and needs to be amended - people at the Agriculture Ministry said and added that the current GMO Law allowed up to 0.9 percent of genetic modification, which "creates space even for some modifications that are experimental in nature."
