The price of the virtual currency bitcoin soared above $1,000 for the first time on Wednesday.
Bitcoin has gained 4,000% in value since the beginning of this year, but it is not clear for how much longer its value will grow and whether it will be sustainable. Many people expect this bubble to burst very soon.
At the very start of 2013, one ounce of gold was priced at about USD 1,687.90, whereas the price of one bitcoin was at USD 13.30.
Bitcoin is a virtual currency that was first used as a term in 2008. Its name is a combination of two words: bit and coin.
