At the end of 2024, Gebrüder Weiss Holding AG achieved an impressive annual turnover of EUR 2.71 billion, but, as Roland Raith, General Manager for Serbia, tells eKapija, last year will be remembered as exceptional also for the successes achieved on the Serbian market, in the jubilee year of operations in Serbia. With the head of the company in our country, we discussed realized and planned investments, as well as current economic developments in Europe and the world.

eKapija: Last year, you celebrated 20 years of operations in Serbia. Looking back, what would you highlight as the company’s greatest achievements?

- Over the past two decades, we’ve built a fully owned infrastructure – with company-owned office and warehouse facilities – assembled a team of over 300 employees and built long-standing partnerships with national and international customers. These pillars contribute significantly to our resilience in a dynamic market environment.

eKapija: In which service sectors have you recorded the highest growth?

- 2024 was remarkable in two respects: Our Home Delivery Service recorded a 50% increase in shipments, while our national land transport business grew by 40% – in each case compared to the previous year.
This development is the result of rising demand, growing online trade, and our consistent optimization of operational processes.

eKapija: How much have you invested so far in logistics terminals in Serbia, and are there any new projects on the horizon—plans to expand existing capacities or perhaps technological innovations worth mentioning ?

Gebrüder Weiss has specifically expanded our logistics structure in Serbia: At the beginning of 2025, we established an additional regional hub in Čačak – a central location for the more efficient processing of our domestic transport. Since 2024, we have also expanded our cross-dock facilities in Belgrade with a focus on Home Delivery and Automotive Logistics. At the same time, our Air & Sea team has moved to a larger office in Novi Sad, where they coordinate international freight traffic from Serbia to destinations all over the world together with our team in Belgrade.

eKapija: How do current economic developments, as well as increasingly frequent geopolitical and social upheavals in Europe and the world, including Serbia, affect your sector and your company’s operations specificall?

- Global challenges such as volatile supply chains, rising operating costs and geopolitical uncertainty in Europe are having a noticeable impact on our business. But it is precisely in times like these that reliability is crucial. We focus on operational stability, flexibility in processing, and targeted customer solutions. Serbia is increasingly benefiting from the trend toward nearshoring, with many companies relocating production and distribution processes back closer to their sales markets. This strengthens Serbia`s role as a logistics platform for the whole of Southeast Europe.

eKapija: Is Serbia an attractive market for logistics companies today?

- Serbia is strategically located between EU member states and key markets in Eastern Europe. Its location on pan-European corridors and free trade agreements with the EU, CEFTA, the EAEU, and China are making the country increasingly attractive for integration into global supply networks. We see Serbia as an emerging logistics center in the Western Balkans region – with Gebrüder Weiss as a reliable partner for transport, logistics, and warehousing.

eKapija: How do you see the future of transport and logistics in the coming period? What do you think will shape this industry—can you point out some key trends?

- Digitalization and automation remain the most important drivers. While we are closely monitoring international developments, we are currently focusing on digital solutions with immediate benefits for our customers: Our customer portal offers real-time transparency for shipments, including current transport status and precise ETA display – simple and intuitive to use. At the same time, innovative last-mile delivery solutions—such as autonomous vehicles and drones—will redefine speed and efficiency, while sustainable practices and smart infrastructure will become essential for meeting evolving customer demands.

eKapija: What are the company’s future plans—not only in Serbia but also in the wider region? What level of investment is planned for this year?

- Our focus going forward remains on sustainability, investments in electric delivery vehicles, and improving last-mile transport. We are also dedicated to enhancing productivity through digitalization and strengthening both our domestic and international network. Above all, we aim to remain a reliable supply chain partner for businesses in Serbia and the wider region, continuously evolving and offering solutions to meet the changing demands of the market.
