Air Serbia close to deciding on building its own airplane maintenance hangar – Fleet to have 32 aircraft next year

The Serbian national airline carrier Air Serbia plans to decide soon whether to establish its own MRO facility as the carrier expects to reach a fleet of 32 aircraft in 2026.

An MRO is a hangar for the maintenance of aircraft (MRO – maintenance, reparations and operations).

– We have a high focus on the MRO project this year – Air Serbia CEO Jiri Marek told Aviation Week Network. – We are concentrating on going more deeply into that direction. Most likely, we will decide within the next three months to build our hangar for line and base maintenance.

This, as this aviation-specialized portal reports, includes additional aircraft parking positions at the airport. The hangar also should be able to accommodate aircraft from Air Serbia’s Airbus A330 fleet.

– The MRO project will most likely happen in the partnership, however, there are many options still on the table – says Marek. He adds that it is too early to state specifics about hiring targets for an in-house MRO center.

Air Serbia currently outsources base maintenance across multiple facilities throughout Europe. The carrier has predominantly used Turkish Technic in Istanbul, but it has also sent work to Atitech in Naples, Aero Technic BG in Sofia and JAT Tehnika in Belgrade.

Let us remind that it is precisely with Turkish Technic that Air Serbia also announced, two years ago, the construction of a MRO center at the Nikola Tesla Airport, in line with, as the Polish aviation portal Rynek Lotniczy reported, the joint-investment agreement.

Aviation Week Network writes that Air Serbia’s fleet includes 10 Airbus A319s, four A330-200s, three A320s, 10 ATR 72-600s, and two Embraer E195s. It is close to signing a letter of intent (LOI) for two more Embraers, expecting deliveries in the fourth quarter. Air Serbia also signed a LOI for another Airbus A320ceo for delivery during the upcoming winter season and the carrier is in discussion for two more A320s.
