Radioactive waste processing plant in Serbia to start working in autumn

– The facility has been designed, adapted, equipped and test operations are in progress. All these activities were done in cooperation with the experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency and with financial help from the European Commission and the agency and, of course, our government – stated Arbutina.
As he added, the processing of radioactive waste and the conditioning (re-packing and sealing) of the used-up sources of ionizing radiation will be done at the plant.
As he pointed out, the new plant should enable a considerable reduction in the radioactive waste left over way back from the period of the former Yugoslavia.
The project of improving nuclear safety in Serbia, the agreement on which was signed on June 27, 2023, is implemented in cooperation with the European Commission and the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine. Financial funds in the amount of EUR 2.43 million have been secured by the European Union.
– Those funds were used to equip a modern nuclear forensics laboratory, which enables the identification and measuring of nuclear and other materials. The equipment pertains to measuring devices, but also the improvement of the capacities for the transport and storage of materials – said Arbutina.
