BYD’s new electric vehicle plant in Szeged plans to hire 10,000 employees, with 20% of positions designated for engineers, Mayor Laszlo Botka announced during the city’s budget presentation, as reported by the Budapest Business Journal (BBJ).

BYD aims to begin manufacturing its first electric cars in Szeged by the end of the year. To address local labor shortages, the company plans to recruit from the area of the Hungarian town of Mako, the Vojvodina region, and among students in Szeged’s vocational and engineering programs.

The facility will include dedicated worker accommodation, protective green belts, and recreational areas, such as a pond for employees.

To support higher-level staff, new housing developments are also planned in Szeged.

Around 1,000 Chinese workers will arrive to construct the production halls in the coming months, initially staying in temporary accommodation.
