The Government of Serbia and China Energy International Group have signed a memorandum of understanding that pertains to strategic cooperation in the energy sector. The minister of mining and energy, Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic, who signed the memorandum on behalf of the Government of Serbia, said that the cooperation would enable reaching greater energy storage capacities through new technologies.

She said that it was a very important thing in the world at that moment, considering the striving to connect as many renewable energy sources as possible. The minister repeated that Serbia had obliged for nearly every second megawatt to come from RES by 2030, making energy storage extremely important.

Chinese companies, she said, have a developed methodology and technology when it comes to compressed air.

– That energy storage technology was current ten years ago too, but it was considered insufficiently developed. Such storage facilities now exist in Great Britain, and they were built by Chinese companies and this is a possibility to bring such a technology to Serbia – said Djedovic Handanovic.

This is a direct foreign investment from Chinese companies, which will be put in the function of Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS), said Djedovic Handanovic.

The ambassador of China to Serbia, Li Ming, said that the quick economic growth of Serbia was noticeable, which, according to him, will require more renewable energy, in which, he adds, the advantage belongs to Chinese companies.

– We now have this very advanced air compression energy. I hope that this cooperation can be achieved on the ground as soon as possible in order to bring more benefit to people and the economic development of Serbia – said the ambassador.

On behalf of the Chinese side, the memorandum was signed by Wang Bo, the vice president of the Chinese company for South Asia and Central and Eastern Europe.
