The American tech giant AMD, the second biggest manufacturer of processors in the world, has announced the opening of two development centers in Serbia, which will employ 90 engineers. Andrej Zdravkovic, the senior vice president of GPU Technologies and Engineering (G&E) Software and Chief Software Officer at AMD, reveals for RTS the details about the role of Serbian engineers in the development of chips based on artificial intelligence and talks about the importance of this technology for the future of the industry.

Opening of development centers in Belgrade and Nis

The development centers will be opened in Belgrade and Nis, with 60 engineers in the capital city and 30 in Nis, with plans for the number to double in the foreseeable future.

– The plans are big. Serbia has top engineers and education system, and our engineers will play a key role in the development of fundamental technologies for AMD – said Zdravkovic, who is himself a graduate of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade.

Role of Serbian engineers in development of new AI chips

According to Zdravkovic, Serbian engineers are already working on the development of new chips based on artificial intelligence, which will be used in big computer centers such as the ones Microsoft uses for ChatGPT.

– One group of engineers works on chips for big centers, whereas the other develops new Neural Processing Units for the PC industry – pointed out Zdravkovic.

Chips as “new oil” of tech world

Zdravkovic emphasized that chips were “the new oil” in the tech world, considering their importance for the future growth.

– The semiconductor sector is heading the technological progress, enabling all other industries to follow that development – he concluded.

With this move, AMD is strengthening its position in the global market and opening the door to further innovations in the field of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies, relying on talented Serbian engineers and experts.
