AliExpress to open warehouse in Serbia – What could prevent Chinese company’s success in our country?

The Chinese online retail company AliExpress, owned by the Alibaba conglomerate, plans to open a warehouse in Serbia. One of the company’s shareholders, Nemanja Antic, says on Vladimir Stankovic’s podcast that two groups of people will benefit from the arrival of AliExpress.

– The first group are general customers, who could exploit the lower prices initially. The second group are small businesses, which still haven’t found an interest in registering with the existing platforms (for online retail) – points out Antic.

As a problem that AliExpress might have, he pointed out how long it might operate with a loss in a small market. He explains why he considers that a problem.

– Us shareholders are not satisfied with the profitability of Alibaba, which means that we are not that relaxed about a market expansion at any cost. If it is not profitable, it will have to close in Serbia – emphasizes Antic.


Antic notes that there are many markets in which this Chinese company has not succeeded.

– They went bankrupt in America several years ago, so there is no guarantee that they will succeed. In this initial wave, the customers will benefit from the lower prices and small businesses will find an interest of their own. I am very doubtful about Alibaba being able to make the customers literate in this sense and make some kind of a salto vitale in quick courier delivery – concludes Antic.
