Bulgaria and Romania will be part of the Schengen area as of March 31 this year. In this way, both countries will have the possibility of free movement between the member states for about 400 million citizens. What can travelers expect?

Bulgaria and Romania have been members of the European Union since 2007, and as of this year both countries are entering the Schengen zone. However, as they were not part of the borderless area before, passengers are still obliged to show their passports upon entry.

Passengers arriving by air or sea from other Schengen countries will no longer need to show their passports upon arrival. This means that passengers on flights, cruises and ferries will not be subject to checks, which will greatly facilitate travel.

However, if you are traveling by car or arriving by train or bus, you will still need to show your documents. This is primarily due to Austria's insistence, as the rules governing land borders have not yet been established, Euronews reports.

Both countries, at least for now, will not change their existing currencies to the euro, which is why, among other things, prices are not expected to jump. Also, increased competition between countries could counterbalance any tendency for price spikes in the most visited places. Because travelers can easily compare prices, hotels and other businesses want to stay competitive.

Although Romania and Bulgaria are off the beaten tourist track, so to speak, this does not mean that they have nothing to offer tourists. It is actually their trump card. Romania is known as a country of natural beauty, rich history and cultural heritage, with charming villages where time seems to stand still.

Bulgaria, on the other hand, is quite an interesting country with a developed and diverse tourist offer. The rich heritage includes extremely well-preserved cultural and historical monuments. There is also the Black Sea, whose coastline is characterized by sunny seashores, long sandy beaches the color of gold, quiet bays, romantic capes and hospitable fishing towns.

Both countries now offer tourists more freedom to explore at their own pace, using eco-friendly options like trains or bicycles. This means that they will be able to get to know and appreciate local cultures and responsible tourism practices more deeply, which would contribute to the environment and communities they visit.

Excluding Romania and Bulgaria, the Schengen area consists of 27 countries. Twenty-three belong to the EU, and four are associated countries of the European Free Trade Association. These are Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The last country to join the Schengen zone was Croatia in 2022.
