If you land at the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport and wish to directly go to a destination in Serbia, you will need to rent a car, because no other option is currently available. In case you don’t want to do so, you will first have to go to the rail or bus station in Belgrade and head for your desired destination.

We asked whether connecting the airport by direct lines with other cities in Serbia and the surrounding area has even been considered, but the Ministry of Transport has not responded. However, the airport says:

– The organization of city and intercity transport is not within the airport’s responsibilities. We support all the initiatives which aim to better connect the airport with cities in Serbia and the region.

There is good will, and there is no doubt that this kind of an initiative would put the Serbian capital city shoulder to shoulder with European cities, which, in this sense, pay more attention to rail transport.

Traveling by train from the airport to cities all over the country

For example, the Bon Traveler blog recommends to tourists from the USA the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol if they are exploring north Europe.

– It’s one of the best-connected airports around as just below is the train station. The train station gives you access to major lines within the Netherlands as well as quick changes to neighboring countries – it says.

ShowMeTheJourney highlights Vienna, saying that “its station is now directly linked to multiple other Austrian cities by trains which are among Europe's best.” The list also highlights Graz, whose airport is connected with the main rail station in the city, which has frequent direct trains to/from Bruck an der Mur, Klagenfurt, Leoben, Vienna, Villach and Wiener-Neustadt.

The Brussels airport is also linked by train with most other major Belgian and Dutch cities, Denmark stands out as well, which, thanks to its geography, has international train services to and from Germany and Sweden.

– If you will be flying into Copenhagen, in order to begin a tour of Europe on which you won't be taking to the skies, your first ride will be the train journey directly from the airport – the article says.

The only French airports which have stations served by long-distance trains directly linked to the terminals are Paris Charles de Gaulle and Lyon St Exupery. On the list of the Top 20 busiest British airports, only Aberdeen, Bristol, East Midlands, Glasgow, Leeds-Bradford and Liverpool don't have either rail stations, or airport operated transfers with the nearest station.

On the other hand, Italy too lacks a station located at an airport where it's possible to make direct transfers between planes and frequent long-distance trains. However, a high number of Italy's busiest airports are served by dedicated transfers to nearby stations by people mover, tram or bus.

When it comes to Spain, there are only local trains which solely provide services to and from city centers.

Which lines does Belgrade need?

According to the Zamaaero portal, Belgrade ought to get bus lines which would be operated at least four times a day, in line with the schedule of Air Serbia, and each hour to Novi Sad. It also proposes lines to Sabac, Sombor, Subotica, Vrsac, Kraljevo, Zlatibor, Vranje and so on, but also to Timisoara, Vukovar, Zupanja, Tuzla, Banjaluka and others.

Connections between the airport and the city center – Belgrade, Kraljevo, Nis

If you want to reach Belgrade from the Nikola Tesla Airport by public transport, the bus lines 72 (airport – Zeleni Venac), 607 (Surcin – New Belgrade) and 860 I (Sava Square – Industrial Zone Baric), as well as the mini bus A1 (Slavija Square, Kralja Milutina Street – airport), are available.

When we’re talking about the airport in Kraljevo, it can be reached by bus or cab, because, as said on the website, “there is currently no direct bus line to the Morava Airport.”

In Nis, there are the round bus lines 34A or 34B, depending on from which part of the city you arrive to the Constantine the Great Airport. The railroad also passes near the airport… as it does in Podgorica, for example, where there’s the train stop “Airport”.
