Serbia can secure up to a third of its annual needs for gas from Azerbaijan, the minister of mining and energy of Serbia, Dubravka Djedovic, stated today. During a working visit to Baku, she talked to the minister of energy of Azerbaijan, Parviz Shahbazov, the minister of economy, Mikayil Jabbarov, representatives of the company Socar and the president of the company AzerEnerji, Baba Rzayev.

Those talks, as Djedovic pointed out, are important for carrying out Serbia’s plans for the diversification of the energy supply sources and increasing energy independence.

She added that she had talked to Shahbazov about the quantities of gas that Serbia could get from Azerbaijan with the completion of the Bulgaria-Serbia interconnector next year.

– In the future, we can expect up to a third of our needs for gas to be met from Azerbaijan. At the meetings, we also discussed plans for the construction of a new gas facility in our country. Those are extremely important topics, because they enable us to diversify the supply sources and to have a greater degree of energy independence in these uncertain times – Djedovic emphasized.

Cooperation in the field of electrical energy and the planned construction of an undersea cable beneath the Black Sea, on whose construction an agreement was signed recently between the governments of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary, was also in the focus of the visit.

– Through this cable, Azerbaijan will deliver to the European Union considerable quantities of electrical energy each year. When the project is realized, it will benefit Serbia as well – Djedovic said.

She pointed out that, thanks to the good operations of the hydro capacities and the favorable weather conditions, in December, Serbia had not imported electrical energy, but added that it was important to continue with good planning and working on securing additional energy quantities. Djedovic is on a visit to Azerbaijan as part of the working visit of the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, to that country.
