Institute for Biological Research “Sinisa Stankovic” Developing New Pharmacology Approach to Therapy for Obesity and Associated Metabolic Diseases

Scientists from the Institute for Biological Research “Sinisa Stankovic”, together with their colleagues from the Faculty of Biology in Belgrade, the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad and the Faculty of Medicine in Nis, within the PROMIS project of the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, are researching the reprogramming of the cells of white fat tissue with the help of select pharmacology strategies, the so-called “browning”. The project WARMED is developing a new pharmacology approach which will be applicable in cell transplant therapy for obesity and associated metabolic diseases, according to the website of Science Fund of Serbia.

Within the regular monitoring of the realization of projects, the Science Fund visited the research team of the WARMED project, consisting of 6 female scientists. During the supervisory visit, the manager of the project, Aleksandra Jankovic, presented the project and the results made so far, as well as the laboratory work and the equipment that was used and that was secured through the PROMIS program of the Science Fund. This is a project which is in the final stage of realization and which has already achieved significant scientific results. In addition to the published science publications, the project team is working on protecting the intellectual property and the patent.

In addition to the researchers and the employees of the Science Fund, the visit included foreign associates of the Science Fund, Dorotea Sturn, Adrian Kuraz and Franci Demsar, internationally recognized experts with long-standing experience in science and research and managing European science funds.
