Experiences from nature, for most people, come down to their seeing a plant or an animal, but not knowing what species it is. They thereby remain surrounded nature which, for the most part, remains a mystery to them.
iNaturalist started out as a community that drew its knowledge from the experience of individuals, because users could send photographs of plants and animals for others to identify them. Today, experts from this community are responsible for the development of an app that reveals the secrets of nature – five years ago, they upgraded the process so that artificial intelligence recognizes plants from photographs.
iNaturalist was founded in 2008 by three biology students and later turned into a community which gathers fans of nature. Together, they have created an incredible list of varieties, and they would occasionally make interesting discoveries, PC Press reports.
The app is free, useful and available for iOS and Android, and what’s interesting is that it also has a map showing all the plant varieties discovered in the surroundings.
