Godfrey: Diversification of Energy Sources Best Course for Serbia

Serbia has to make its own decisions when it comes to energy sources, but the best course for it is to diversify energy sources and the way it produces its energy, stated the US Ambassador to Belgrade, Anthony Godfrey.

– If you rely only on supply from Russia, it will be more difficult for you to negotiate about a favorable price. We expect Serbia to soon take part in a very important program for the introduction of gas imports through Greece, which is a very important partnership. It is important for new energy sources to be introduced, primarily green energy sources. I am proud that American companies cooperate toward that end with Serbia – Godfrey said for TV Prva.

When asked about that fact that Serbia wants the least expensive gas possible, and that it would be more expensive if received from an American company, Godfrey said that he had discussed that issue a lot with president Aleksandar Vucic and repeated that, for a long-term energy future, the best thing for Serbia would be to diversify energy, as that would provide it with a better price.

– The aim of president Vucic is to take part in another gas pipeline with the Balkans partners, so as to have access to sources outside Russia. Unfortunately, we see that Russia is using access to energy sources for political purposes. Serbia should not be a hostage of only one source of energy. It is a wise policy and president Vucic understands that well – Godfrey said.

– Serbia is a sovereign country and I believe that it understands the value of diversification of supply sources, politically and economically – he concluded.
