Begej River Opening its Water Gates After 65 Years

After 65 years, the river Begej is opening its water gates in the settlement Sanmartinu Maghiar in Romania, through which the first boat has passed recently.

Rehabilitated with the funds of the European Union, through the international Romanian-Serbian cross-border project, called “The Repair of the Navigation Infrastructure on the Begej Canal”, the gates in Sanmartinu Maghiar, a Romanian settlement on the Begej, have let through the first boat, which, when the hydrotechnical hubs Klek and Srpski Itebej are repaired, will sail down the Begej through Serbia as well.

The history of the Begej Canal begins in 1728, when it was built. For over 200 years, it was the main link of the Banat areas in Romania and Serbia. During World War 2, numerous navigation lock facilities were damaged, and the tense socioeconomic situation in the region and the communist regimes severed the water link between the neighboring states in 1958.

Now, more than 200 years after the establishment of the Begej Canal, with the repair of hydrotechnical hubs, wider possibilities for trade and tourism in this part of Europe will open and the good neighborly cooperation between Romania and Serbia will be promoted in the most beautiful way.
