Sweden Adopts New Strategy for Supporting Reforms in Serbia

The Government of Sweden has adopted the decision on the new seven-year strategy for the reform cooperation of Sweden with the Western Balkans and Turkey. The continuation of the cooperation with the countries in the region will strengthen the conditions for a democratic and inclusive development, announced the Embassy of Sweden.

With the new strategy, Sweden will intensify the efforts toward human rights, democracy, rule of law, gender equality, inclusive economic development, environmental protection and addressing the problem of climate change. The Swedish support will also be oriented toward the strengthening of peaceful and inclusive societies, and on the building of wide-encompassing and long-term relations between Sweden and the countries of the region.

– Development in the neighborhood of the European Union is of importance for Sweden and the EU. In is in Sweden’s interest to continue cooperating with the countries of the Western Balkans in order to contribute to democratic development with a focus on human rights, gender equality and rule of law – says Per Ohlsson Fridh, the minister for international development cooperation.


The fund for the new strategy for 2021-2027 amounts to EUR 560 million, of which EUR 500 million is set aside for the Western Balkans and EUR 60 million for Turkey.
