Faculty of Civil Engineering: Effects of Construction of Subway on Reducing Traffic Problems Negligible, Costs Enormous

The Faculty of Civil Engineering at the University of Belgrade has submitted, as part of the public review, complaints to the Draft General Regulation Plan for Rail Systems in Belgrade with Elements of Detailed Development, as announced on the faculty’s Twitter account.

– Our academic honor obliges us to contribute, with our professional position, to making technically sound decisions which have far-reaching consequences on the wider social community – the announcement says.

The faculty points out in its explanation that “the proposed Plan is not good, the effects of the construction of the subway system on the reduction of traffic problems will be negligible, and the costs enormous”.

Let us remind that the citizens’ association “Po meri metro” has launched the initiative for a branch of the first subway line to be built from the Zarkovo station in Trgovacka Street toward the Petlovo Brdo neighborhood, along the neighborhoods Cerak, Cerak-Vinogradi, Vidikovac, Labudovo Brdo and Petlovo Brdo, and for the first line of the Belgrade Subway to pass through the Beograd Centar (Belgrade Center) railway station and the Clinical Center of Serbia.

The deputy mayor of Belgrade, Goran Vesic, rejected the complaints of a part of the public regarding the future routes and stated that the routes of the first two lines of the Belgrade Subway would not be changed.

Vesic said for N1 that a team of international experts had defined the subway lines and that the construction would begin in November, whereas the first two lines should be operational by 2030.

Following last year’s public review of the study for the early public review of the GRP of the rail systems in Belgrade, to which numerous complaints were made, the authorities also made a response that didn’t contain detailed explanations as to why most of them had not been accepted or had been marked as “unfounded”.
