At the meeting in Brussels, the ambassadors of the 27 member states of the EU approved the removal of Serbia from the list of countries safe for traveling across the borders of the Schengen area.

Serbia, alongside five other countries, has been removed from the list due to the deteriorating epidemiological situation in the country, according to Brussels.

This decision should be officially formalized by the EU Council by the end of the week.

The list, which is updated bi-weekly by 27 EU ambassadors, is a recommendation for member states when deciding which third countries their borders will be open to, i.e. whose citizens and travelers will not be subjected to restrictive measures.

The EU Council emphasizes that the recommendation "has no legal character", and that the member states are "responsible for the implementation of the content of the recommendation".

Citizens of those third countries, now also including Serbia, that are not on the list, are not automatically blocked from traveling into the EU.

Everyone who has EU citizenship or residence permits, members of their families and those who have a valid reason to travel will still be allowed to travel to Schengen area.
