The Museum of Yugoslavia has opened the tender for the preparation of the evaluation of the current state of the House of Flowers within the museum’s complex.

According to the tender, the plan is to fully reconstruct this building, which contains the tomb of Josip Broz Tito.

The House of Flowers was built in 1975 as a facility with rooms for work and rest and a winter garden in the central part, after which the building was named. The building was designed by architect Stjepan Kralj and has a total area of 902 m2. The works were carried out by the Guard’s Engineering Unit.

Josip Broz is buried in the central part of the former winter garden, and to the left of his tomb is the tomb of Jovanka Broz. The House of Flowers also features the Josip Broz Tito Library Unit and a space for thematic exhibits.

– Considering the time of the exploitation of the facility, but also the specificity of its purpose and content, and based on an estimation of its condition by the users, a thorough reconstruction of the facility is needed. In addition to the necessary construction works, the reconstruction also entails the reconstruction of all installations (thermal-technical, electrical, water, sewer, weak and strong electricity and fire-warning and fire-fighting installations), so that the facility may retain its status as a memorial and an exhibition space – says the technical specification of the tender.

It is added that the spatial, architectural and historical context of the facility and its purpose dictates special attention in preparing the reconstruction project, so the pre-requirement for its preparation is the surveying of its existing state, that is, the preparation of a project of the current state.

The tender expires on July 19.

The museum couldn’t tell us more about the upcoming reconstruction, but we were told that the reconstruction of the 25. maj Museum was in progress and that the first phase, entailing interior works, had been completed. They added that the plan is for the reconstruction to continue in 2021 or 2022, depending on the funds available. Following that, the first next facility planned for reconstruction is the House of Flowers.

Let us remind that the reconstruction of the structure at the entrance to the House of Flowers, the so-called K25 Gate, through which up to 150,000 people pass each year, was completed in 2018.
