So far, smart traffic light technology has been installed on 95 intersections in Belgrade, 15 of which in the past month alone. By the end of the year, modernized light signalization will be installed on more than 200 intersections.

The plan is for a total of 322 intersections to function in an adaptable, “smart” way by 2023, the mayor of Belgrade, Zoran Radojicic, said on TV K1, as reported by Beoinfo.

He pointed out that artificial intelligence would manage traffic in Belgrade in a specific and efficient way.

– Experts from Siemens, who are working on a successful organization of traffic, say that nobody has this kind of a system in Europe at the moment, so I expect a lot from this project. The analysis has been done based on the devices installed in Ruzveltova and Cvijiceva streets, as well as in New Belgrade, and according to the results, the time savings amount to around 20%. Certainly, what’s even more important is the issue of environmental protection, because the emission of carbon-dioxide will be reduced by around 500 tons – Radojicic said.

According to him, EUR 7.3 million has been spent on installing “smart intersections” so far, whereas the total value of this investment will be EUR 23.7 million.

– When it comes to the improvement of the citizens’ quality of life, the modernization of intersections and light signalization saves time and reduces pollution, but also facilitates movement through the city for people with disabilities, that is, those with impaired sight and hearing. As in other big cities, mobility in Belgrade is a very important subject and we are thereby improving the way the city is functioning. It is especially important that public transport vehicles, especially trams, will be given an advantage at intersections, so we will further improve the functioning of the traffic system that way – Radojicic said.
