All things considered, the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of robotics and automation. The reasons are clear – machines can't get infected or transfer viruses the same way people can.

Agriculture and food production are the leading trend in robotics, so it's no wonder that the Root AI startup, which has already been noted by the world media, is announcing a new round of financing. They have received USD 7.2 million from various investors to develop their harvesting robots, increasing the company's capital to USD 9.5 million.

This Boston-based company is not the only one developing this kind of a harvesting robot, but what sets apart Root AI's robot, called AI Virgo, is that it is not specialized in harvesting a single culture. Its special design enables the harvesting of various fruits.

The first versions to be launched will focus on the harvesting of tomatoes, and it will also be able to harvest other fruits, such as cucumbers, peppers, strawberries and others.

Two Californian farms are already using this system and they also want to install additional robots in their facilities in the USA and Canada in order to be competitive during the rising demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
