Cycling Lane to be Built from Klek to Romanian Border

(Illustration) Within the “Revitalization of Navigation Infrastructure on the Begej” project, a cycling lane is being built from Klek to the Romanian border.

The works are worth nearly EUR 2 million. The lane will be built along an embankment on the Begej canal and will also be used for machines and inspection.

This is the final phase of the construction of a cycling lane which starts in Zrenjanin and ends in Timisoara. It is 75 kilometers long.

The plan is for the works to be completed in September. In addition to the double-purpose lane, the project also entails the repair of hydrotechnical facilities in Klek and Srpski Itebej, as well as the construction of a floating wharf for the docking of vessels in Zrenjanin.

The works have an ecological importance as the first step is solving the decades-old problem of the extremely polluted sediment at the bottom of the canal, in order to re-establish navigation on the Begej and establish the ecologically friendly bicycle traffic.

After the works are completed, the tourism, cycling, infrastructure and connection of the region through increased transport are all expected to develop, says JVP Vode Vojvodine.
