Construction of Sombor-Kikinda High-Speed Route Announced for 2021

Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic has stated that the project-technical documentation for the Sombor-Kikinda high-speed route will be completed by the end of the year and that the construction will begin in 2021.

– This is a demanding section, 175 kilometers long and estimated at around EUR 835 million. It is an important road, which will connect Romania, Hungary and Serbia and contribute to the development of industry in this part of Serbia – Mihajlovic said during her visit to Sombor, where she took a tour of the rehabilitated state road on the section from Sombor to Backi Breg together with Mayor Dusanka Golubovic and the director of the PE Roads of Serbia, Zoran Drobnjak.

She said that, in the preceding four years, RSD 1.2 billion had been invested in the reconstruction of regional and partly local roads as well in the West Backa District.

– This will continue with the new investment cycle and the project of rehabilitation of 5,000 kilometers of roads, so we will have reconstructed over 300 kilometers of roads in the West Backa District – the minister said.

She added that the rehabilitated route from Sombor to Backi Breg was important as it would connect people better, especially the residents of Sombor and Baja, two brotherly cities, and because of the Backi Breg border crossing, which should be able to take cargo traffic of over five tons.

Mihajlovic added that she expected the project-technical documentation for the Sombor-Kikinda high-speed route to be completed before the end of 2020.
