The works on modernizing and expanding of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, which started at the beginning of the current year, have been ongoing without major disruptions, even during the state of emergency, announced the company Belgrade Airport, which runs the airport as a concessionaire.

– We expect the major works to be executed over the next three years. These include terminal expansion, new, inserted runway and additional taxiways construction, additional aircraft parking positions, a new de-/anti-icing pad, additional car parking spaces, as well as new access roads – stated Francois Berisot, CEO of Belgrade Airport.

He pointed out that, thanks to the planned capacity upgrades the airport, which served around 6,2 million passengers in 2019, would be able to handle projected 15 million passengers at the end of the concession period.

– Our aim is to significantly improve the level of service, comfort and variety of commercial offers at Belgrade's Nikola Tesla Airport – Berisot stated.

Currently, extensive works are progressing at several locations. The extension of the existing terminal building (Pier C) will improve the airport capacity, the functionality and the comfort for the passengers and the airlines. Furthermore, upgrade of the aprons is also in progress, so it will increase the capacity to park more aircraft simultaneously.

Estimated value of these works is around RSD 5 billion (more than EUR 40 million). Additionally, preparatory works for the construction of the new, inserted runway started a few days ago.

All these works are organized to have limited impact on scheduled air traffic, once it is restored.

Next stages of the project, it is said in the press release, will include a strong focus on eco-friendly businesses in order to reduce environmental impact in terms of CO2, water and waste.

– A new power plant will be built to produce heat and electricity, which will shift from heavy fuels to more environmentally friendly energy sources and reduce emissions. The plan also includes a solar power plant, as well as solid waste and wastewater treatment plants – the company says.

Over the next 25 years, Belgrade Airport will bring to Nikola Tesla Airport the international experience and good practice of the parent company VINCI Airports, the leading private airport operator in the world managing the development and operation of 45 airports worldwide.
