Construction of New Building of Princely Serbian Theater in Kragujevac Planned – Opera and Ballet in the Heart of Sumadija

The preparation of the project and construction of a new building of the Princely Serbian Theater in a new location in Kragujevac, is being planned, announced Sanja Matejic, a theater artist and a member of the Princely Serbian Theater troupe.

– The existing building has long since become inadequate for the needs and the importance of the first Serbian theater. The new building would be a central cultural institution, with a larger stage, that would be able to accommodate all the big troupes from the country and the area and which would be adequate for opera and ballet, which Kragujevac has deserved for a long time – Matejic said.

Theater Arts and Media Production M.Sc. Vojo Lucic said that Kragujevac did not have a cultural strategy at that moment and that it was important to work on promoting the cultural heritage, but also contemporary arts in the city and the whole Serbia, which the founding of a cultural center would help achieve.

– The founding of a cultural center would create the capacities for the realization of various projects from all fields of culture. The center would have a studio for exhibits, screenings, workshops, lectures... It is also important to mention a survey conducted among the people of Kragujevac which showed that there's a need for the founding of a cultural center for children in the city as well – Lucic said.
