Slovenian manufacturer of home appliances Gorenje will lay off 2,200 people due to the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, the Slovenian public television reports.

A thousand jobs will be lost in the factory and the offices in Slovenia, and the rest in other countries, said union representative Zan Zeba for the TV station after an extraordinary meeting organized by the company's management.

The measures follow the dramatic drop in the demand, related to the pandemic, the Slovenian television reports and adds that other details will be announced subsequently.

Gorenje is one of the largest Slovenian exporters, with factories in Serbia and the Czech Republic. The company was bought by Chinese group Hisense in 2018, with the aim of expanding the production and sale of home appliances throughout Europe.

Let us remind that the factory resumed production activities in Valjevo on April 13, after a two-week break.
