Damjan Stanković, a designer from Belgrade, has developed a very interesting concept for traffic lights that clearly shows the drivers how long they have to wait until they can keep on driving. Stanković believes that such information would improve the overall traffic dynamics, reduce fuel consumption and, thus, preserve the environment by cutting carbon emmissions.

LED timers can be easily installed onto existing traffic light systems without much effort and make it possible for the drivers to estimated if they have enough time to turn their engines off and do something else while waiting for the green light.

- This type of countdown is must less stressful than the standard counter - Stanković explains.

The author won prestigious "Red Dot" award for this solution, as well as for another three solutions in 2009. We don't know yet if these traffic lights will be installed in the streets of Belgrade, but the designer points out that he already negotiates with bidders.

- To equip Belgrade with such traffic lights is easy to do, but that all depends on the decision of the City Assembly. In practice, it is a very slow process - says Stanković.
