According to CountourGlobal's statement, the reason is that the company does not intend to build coal-powered facilities in the future, as well as the political changes that occurred in the Kosovo territory.
– We will not develop or acquire coal power plants in the future. As a result of the political situation in Kosovo since July, our development project is incapable of reaching its required milestones by the required project completion date in May 2020 so the project cannot proceed – ContourGlobal said.
The Pristina authorities signed a commercial agreement with the American company ContourGlobal on the construction of a new TPP of 500 MW for EUR 1.3 billion in late 2017.
The project was opposed by civil society representatives, who saw it as harmful to the environment and a potential cause of an increase in electricity prices for citizens.
The construction of the TPP Novo Kosovo was supposed to start in 2020, and the commissioning was planned for 2023.
With over 10 billion tons of coal reserves, the Kosovo territory is fifth in the world, but there is still not enough electrical energy.
