Belgrade not to get public bike service – Tendering process canceled due to lack of interest

Belgrade will not get a public bike service this year, despite the announcements by the city authorities, as no one is interested in this job, worth RSD 300 million without VAT.

The Secretariat for Transport of the City of Belgrade has canceled this public procurement procedure, as no bids were made, despite the process being repeated four times.

The plan of the city authorities, which opened the tender on August 19, 2019, was to find a partner with experience with public bike systems in the world, who could own up to 75% of the Belgrade system, whereas the city would be a co-owner with 25%. According to this idea, the plan was for Belgrade to have 150 stations for 900 public bicycles, half of which would be electric ones, Beoinfo reported.

It was envisaged for the selected partner to install 50 stations with 300 bicycles by March 2020 and for the entire system to be completed by the end of the year. As part of this project, nearly 100 kilometers of new cycling lanes should have been built by 2022.

Ahead of the opening of the tender, the deputy mayor of Belgrade, Goran Vesic, said that several big companies were interested in this partnership with the City of Belgrade.

However, since August, when the tender opened, it had been extended four times only to be finally canceled in January.
