The Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunication, Rasim Ljajic, said that only eight member countries of the EU have banned work on Sunday and it's not a strict ban since pharmacies, newsstands, bakeries, exchange offices and farmers' markets are allowed to be open then.

In his guest appearance on RTS Ljajic said that a research and a survey among shop owners, consumers and retail workers are currently being conducted in Serbia.

– We are talking about 300,000 people who work in the commerce sector, commerce makes 10% of the country's GDP and around 15% of total number of employees in Serbia works in commerce. On one hand, we have to take care of those people, their interest and rights while on the other we have to manage our economy and what effect this will have on it, Ljajic said.

According to him, some traders claim that Serbian commerce sector lacks 5,000 workers.

– We have a deficit in the work force and those who call for canceling work on Sunday maintain that the decision would partially solve that problem, Ljajic said and added that the government will consider the decision very carefully.

– The decision has to be the outcome of extensive analysis, research and expertise.
