Serbia Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic has visited the works on the reconstruction of the Lapovo-Kragujevac railway and said that a train ride between these two cities will take less than half an hour beginning with October 1.

After visiting the works in Batocina, she said that, at the end of the next year, a total of around 800 kilometers of regional railways would have been reconstructed, as said in the press release by the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure.

– Regional railways are equally important for citizens as the main corridors we are modernizing and it is our task to create the conditions for those railways to be suitable for new, high-speed trains – Mihajlovic said in Batocina.

As she pointed out, the value of the works on the reconstruction of the 27.5-km Lapovo-Kragujevac railway is EUR 11 million, whereas an additional EUR 4 million was invested in securing the landslide. The works were financed by the Infrastructure of Serbian Railways with its own funds.

– After this reconstruction, works will be carried out on the section from Kragujevac to Kraljevo as well, which is important for a better internal connecting and development of the Sumadija District – Minister Mihajlovic emphasized.

The acting director of the Infrastructure of Serbian Railways, Miroljub Jevtic, said that the reconstruction would be completed on September 30, a month before the deadline, and that a trip between Lapovo and Kragujevac would take 26 minutes.

– The train will operate the Kragujevac-Lapovo route and further to Mladenovac, where it will have a connection with BG Voz – Jevtic said.

The head of the Sumadija District, Biljana Ilic Stosic, said that, 132 years after it was built, the Lapovo-Kragujevac railway would be reconstructed and that citizens would again be able to travel by train at a price cheaper than a bus fare from October 1.

– This railway is also important for cargo traffic and all the companies which operate here – she said.
