Serbia starts exporting pork meat products to EU after 20-year break

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Waterpower Engineering announced today (September 8, 2009) that Serbia, after the 20-year break, can start exporting pork meat products to the market of European Union again.

Export licenses have already been issued to slaughterhouses "Topola" (Bačka Topola), "Big Bull" (Bačinci), "Yuhor" (Jagodina) and "Kolbis" (Novi Sad), and it is expected that the licenses will also be issued to another three slaughterhouses in central and south Serbia.

According to the announcement, the decision on renewed export of pork meat to EU was made on September 3rd, which created a great opportunity for development of cattle growing and meat-packing industry, as well as the opportunity for export of excess pork.

- By passing the Law on Food Safety and regulating all aspects of production, sales and control of meat industry, by investing in quality standards and introducing the series of actions for prevention of illegal import and trade in meat products, we have proved that the companies in Serbia produce quality pork meat products that meet the conditions for export to EU - it is stated in the announcement.
