Higher EU quotas for steel from Serbia not before October

The European Commission is still working on revising the measures pertaining to the import of steel products to the EU market, which also include the quotas for the export of Serbia's Zelezara Smederevo, and the implementation of the measures is not expected before October.

– We intend to finish our analysis as soon as possible, so that the potential changes would come into effect by October 1, 2019 – the EC told Tanjug.

In May, the EC started revising the protective measures pertaining to the import of certain steel products to the EU.

Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic pointed out in the meantime that the quotas of the EC from February 2019 considerably hampered the operations of Zelezara Smederevo and that she hoped that they would increase.

Brussels announced that, in case the set quotas caused problems in terms of the economic perspective of Serbia, they would be revised no later than July 2019.

– Among other things, the EU and Serbia have the Stabilization and Association Process agreement, which aims for economic integration and stabilization. If we see that the economic perspective is changing, the EC will initiate the revision and enable Serbia to benefit from it – European sources explain.

The measures were implemented in February 2019, and the quotas pertain to 26 categories of steel products from countries outside the EU, including Serbia.

When it comes to steel manufacturers in Serbia, the quotas pertain to three categories of products: hot-rolled sheet metal and strips, cold-rolled sheet metal and white sheet metal products.
