Transfer stations with composting facilities are to be built in Vrbas and Backa Palanka, where organic waste will be used to make a humus-like substance which improves the quality of farming land. This was laid out at a presentation held recently at the municipality by representatives of the Urban Planning Department of the Municipal Administration, the Association for Design, Urban Planning and Ecology “Andzor Inzenjering” from Novi Sad, the German organization for international cooperation GIZ and the local Public Utility Enterprise “Komunalac”.
According to the president of the municipality of Vrbas, Milan Glusac, under the agreement between the local self-government and GIZ, the plan is for a composting facility with 1,200 tons of biodegradable waste to be built by 2020. The remaining waste will be sorted, and what doesn't get recycled will be taken to the regional landfill in Novi Sad.
This will create conditions for the municipal landfill in Vrbas, where around 22,000 tons of waste were taken each year, to be closed and recultivated.
