NEDIMOVIC: Access to Egyptian market expected from March 1

Serbian producers and storers of wheat should start exporting to the Egyptian market on March 1, at the moment when the price of wheat is at its highest in the past few years, Serbian Agriculture Minister Branislav Nedimovic stated on January 26.

He said on RTS that the formalities with Egypt had been finalized and that it only remained for the Egyptian Plant Quarantine to carry out its final checks.

– They will come over on February 10 to inspect the storage capacities. We are in contact with producers and storers of wheat and this is the last stage that needs to be carried out. I expect the Egyptian market to become available on March 1 – Nedimovic said.

He added that the price of wheat was at its all time high in a 3-4-year period, amounting to RSD 23.47 per kilogram, and reminded that Egypt was the world’s biggest purchaser of wheat, with annual imports of up to ten million tons.

According to the minister, the price of corn per kilogram has also been growing steadily, amounting to around RSD 17.5 at the moment, with the further growth expected.

– This is the result of the great drought that struck the world’s biggest producers last year, primarily Australia and Russia. The Western Europe had very poor yields, whereas Serbia had very good yields last year. When it comes to corn, the yields were practically at their highest in the past 20 years – Nedimovic said.
