Serbia – Manufacturers of genetically modified soybean to obtain compensation – soybean to be turned to soybean seeds

Ministry of Agriculture of Serbia announced that it had come to the agreement with the manufacturers of genetically modified soybean on turning that soybean to the soybean seeds for fodder. In this way, use of seeds for new sowing will be prevented. The commission that will control conducting of these meausures consists of Inspection Service of the Ministry of Agriculture, local self-management, as well as the representatives of manufacturers of GM soybean. Director of the Administration for Protection of Herbs of Serbia, Miroslav Vujović, announced that the State would not give up eradication of genetically modified soybean discovered on the parcels in Bogatić and Surčin. The warrants for eradication of GM soybean have been sent to 270 manufacturers in Mačva. The inspectors have discovered that GM soybean was planted on 370 hectares in Mačva and another 50 hectares in Surčin. The farmers claim that there are another 3,500 ha of GM soybean in Serbia, but Vujović recently said that the inspectors from the Administration for Protection of Herbs had discovered only 420 ha because they had been prevented by the owners to control the other parcels.
