How to safely run Google Maps while driving?

(Illustration) If you're in a rush or driving a car, unlocking your phone and launching Google Maps can be a demanding and quite dangerous task.

The solution lies in a widget which acts as an elegant shortcut.

The widget screen can be seen without unlocking the device. It is also very useful when you want to give someone directions without showing them which apps you have installed:

1.Swipe left on your iPhone in order to see the list of installed widgets.
2. In order to add the Google Maps widget, scroll down and pick Edit.
3.Scroll down until you find Google Directions.
4. Tap the green Add button to add Google Directions to the Today overview on your widget screen.
5. Tap Done.

How to move it?

Simply return to the screen where you added the widget and switch the plus to the minus sign. If you want to change the order of your widgets, hold and swipe the area next to the apps in order to move them around as you see fit.

How to use it?

After you've done this, the widget will show you a compact version of the app while navigating, where you can follow the directions step by step. If you select the widget, the full version of the app will open, but this requires unlocking your screen.
