Twitter and Bloomberg to launch news channel together

Twitter is preparing to launch a 24-hour streaming news channel in cooperation with Bloomberg, as part of the expansion of its video operations, the two companies reported.

The new streaming channel will “combine the vast global editorial and news-gathering capabilities of Bloomberg with the digital power of Twitter”, the joint press release says, as reported by AFP.

Michael Bloomberg, founder of the financial news service and former mayor of New York, and Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, announced the project at a press conference in New York.

The streaming channel, which should be initiated in 2017, will include content generated by Twitter users and verified by Bloomberg editors, along with live reports of the news agency.

– Today's global news consumer wants and needs more than what's currently available – said Justin Smith, CEO of Bloomberg Media.

– With this new network, we are setting out to reinvent the digital breaking news experience – he added.

Smith stated for the Wall Street Journal, the first to report on the joint project, that the new network “be focused on the most important news for an intelligent audience around the globe and it's going to be broader in focus than our existing network”.

Twitter COO Anthony Noto said in a statement that "Twitter's speed and vast global network of content and commentary combined with the high quality, editorial rigor of Bloomberg is a... powerful combination".

The financial details have not been disclosed.

Twitter's stock jumped by 6.4% following the announcement, ending up at USD 17.53, the highest amount since February.

This service might help Twitter expand its user base, the growth of which has slowed down compared to other social media, AFP estimates.
