One day after coming into effect, the EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, temporarily stopped the Decree of the European Parliament on the systemic border control in the Schengen zone from being enforced due to a huge clogging up of the borders.

As reported by agencies, Avramopoulos reached the decision after being made aware of the problems impeding the traffic flow.

– It has been agreed to temporarily derogate from enforcing the said Decree on border crossings at the interior border towards the Republic of Slovenia and Hungary and to activate the target control towards the residents of the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation – said the General Police Directorate.

The Decree came into effect on Friday, April 7, implementing systemic inspection at the interior EU border between Croatia, Slovenia and Hungary, towards both the residents of third countries and the residents of the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation who are allowed freedom of movement.

The borders were clogged during Friday and Saturday, despite the employment of all available technical and human capacities on the border crossing of Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary.
