Serbian tricolor on 100-m mast – New symbol of Belgrade to be located at confluence of Sava into Danube

The state flag will soon fly over Belgrade from a mast over a hundred meters tall, in honor of Serbia. The mast for the giant tricolor will be mounted at the confluence of the Sava into the Danube, and the size of the flag will make it visible in nearly all parts of the capital of Serbia. The aim of this endeavor is to strengthen the cult of the flag, and other cities of Serbia and the region are expected to follow the example.

The initiative originated last year with Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, who asked the city authorities for a suggestion as to the potential location of the flag.

The decision was made to mount the monumental mast on the New Belgrade side of the confluence of Sava into the Danube, at the mid-point between the Usce shopping mall and the Little War Island. The location currently houses the Serbian River Flotilla base.

City Manager Goran Vesic confirms that the gigantic flag will soon be flown over the capital of Serbia and notes that it will become another one of Belgrade's and Serbia's recognizable symbols.

– Considering that this is a very serious construction endeavor, the project is being prepared by Energoprojekt. The area along the right Danube bank from Branko's Bridge to the Zemun Wharf will be turned into a modern park – Vesic says.

– As part of it, the area surrounding the flag's base will be developed as well, as we expect it to become a tourist attraction for people of Serbia and the region, as well as guests from all over the world.

Vesic points out that the essence of the initiative is to encourage the tradition of displaying and honoring state flags in the Serbian society.

– This should pertain to state institutions, but also to citizens and private companies. The flag is thereby honored as a symbol of Serbia's tradition – Vesic says for Novosti.

The area where the imposing flag is to be mounted should become a place for ceremonies and giving state honors, especially during big national holidays, such as Candlemas, the Armed Forces Day, the Victory Day...

World examples

Mounting state flags of gigantic proportions in prominent places is a practice present in many cities globally. Nearly each big neighborhood in Mexico features a gigantic flag, which is also the case in Brazil, India, Azerbaijan... The US has a strong tradition of honoring the flag, which is displayed prominently in all highly frequented places.

The biggest state flag mast is located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The base is 170 m tall, and the flag is 50 m long and 33 m wide.
